THE CLIENTS:
The clients, Clay and Carly Simmons, and their severely Autistic 18- year old son, Jackson, are moving from Flower Mound, Texas to Paradise, Texas to their forever home. They are looking for help remodeling their kitchen in the new home they bought as the current layout isn’t functioning well for their family. They need space for their prized Jura GIGA 6 coffee maker, space to feed their two dogs Boo and Tibb, and plenty of space to meal prep. It is very important to the Simmons family that Jackson gains more independence as he gets older. We will focus on this when designing the kitchen.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN:
Universal design is very important to this family. Based on their needs we will need to focus on Flexibility of use, Low Physical Effort, and Tolerance for Error when designing their kitchen. This means that the kitchen needs to function for all its users equally, we will be making adjustments that allow the family to age in place and accommodate Jackson’s Autism, and we will need to make the kitchen safer for someone with special needs.

PLACE ATTACHMENT:
We will also be paying close attention to the family’s place attachment to their kitchen. Socially, the kitchen is the main gathering place for the family. We will create a sense of community in the kitchen by utilizing an open floor plan and making the kitchen larger. Physically, We are going to set the clients up with a kitchen that facilitates independence for Jackson. It will be a comfortable, calming, clean kitchen with natural light.
